Our History

Over 50 years of cooperation

In 1971, Frank and Eva Jo Wu moved to Roanoke from Washington DC. They soon realized the area was lacking a natural foods store. They decided to buy bulk cornmeal, whole-wheat flour, and peanut butter, and sell these items at cost to a group of like-minded families out of the basement of their suburban home.

Now, Roanoke Co+op is Virginia’s longest running food co-op, and has come a long, long way since its basement days. Learn more about how we got here, and how our community has grown, through our timeline below, and read the stories of our co-founders.

Our Journey

A co-op timeline of our growth over the years…

Cave Spring Buying Club

1971

Frank and Eva Jo Wu move to Roanoke, and start a buying club as a natural foods resource for their community in the basement of their home on Cave Spring Lane.

Our First Brick & Mortar Location

1973

The decision is made at a now infamous meeting in the basement of the Wu’s home on Cave Spring Lane to open in an official brick and mortar location. The new digs are modest! We open at Riverjack Crafts on Brandon Avenue (now Mama Jean’s Barbecue, 3404 Brandon Ave). It was at one time the Silver Gables Motel before the rooms were rented out to small businesses forming “a kind of hippie enterprise zone.” Founding board member, Fred Laplante, recalls, “That is how the co-op started, it was on eighteen hundred bucks and a bunch of volunteer labor.”

Roanoke Cooperative Association Established

1975

The co-op quickly outgrows the Riverjack Crafts location as well as two other locations on Shenandoah Ave and Jefferson St. The business moves to 813 5th Street (now SECOND Cafe) and it is at this location that The Roanoke Cooperative Association, Ltd. incorporates as an all volunteer organization on May 28, 1978.

Move to 1330 Grandin Rd

1978

The Roanoke Cooperative Association, Ltd. moves to Grandin Road, purchasing the building at 1330 Grandin and acquiring the home behind the store as a gift from a lifetime member. We operate out of this location from 1978-1998.

It Grows Organically

1980s

In the 1980s, the story of our co-op and its massive growth over the years starts piquing the interest of the broader Roanoke community. We are featured as the Extra feature story in a Roanoke Times newspaper article in October of ‘87.

Growth Milestone

1990

The co-op reaches a total of 50 volunteer/working members, along with 8 paid employees!

1319 Grandin Rd Store Opening

1999

The co-op makes a giant step forward with the opening of a new store location at 1319 Grandin Road (where we still are today!).

Grandin Village Farmers Market

2009

The co-op’s general manager Bruce Phlegar, along with others in the co-op community, organize the very first Grandin Village Farmers Market, which lays the groundwork for the inception of the Local Environmental Agriculture Project (LEAP): a nonprofit rooted in our co-op’s belief in equal access to good, local produce and whole foods.

Heritage Point Farm

2012

In 2012, the co-op purchases 17 acres of land in Northeast Roanoke. The co-op farms the land for 3 seasons before leasing the property to up-and-coming agricultural and community-minded organizations. It is now home to The Harvest Collective and Star City Compost.

Downtown Store Opening

2013

In May 2013, the co-op opens its second location in the heart of downtown Roanoke at Center in the Square, and has been serving our downtown community ever since with store manager Jon Shup at the helm.

CHANGE! For Our Community Launches

2013

The co-op launches its very own round-up program, allowing customers to round store purchases up to support a curated selection of non-profits and other organizations that serve our co-op’s Ends. To date the program has raised over $390k for local organizations and like-minded national initiatives.

Grandin Grand Re-opening

2017

In 2017, the Grandin store receives a full interior and exterior overhaul. We also co-brand with the National Co+op Grocers (NCG) that same year, changing our name from Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op to Roanoke Co+op. The re-opening comes with a brand new logo, the installation of a full dining area and deli, new shelving, new coolers and lots of upgrades.

5,000 Owner Milestone

2020

In late 2020, Roanoke Co+op reaches a whopping 5,000 owners!

50th Anniversary

2025

The co-op reaches the half century mark! We celebrate this incredible milestone with a special annual owner social, exclusive campaigns, and much more!

Our People

Learn about the key players in our co-op’s development…

Our long history at the Roanoke Co+op only exists because of the wonderful, driven people that have built our community and laid the foundations of our stores (literally). In 2015, Jim Crawford caught up with four of the founding members of Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op’s inaugural Board of Directors, and wrote a collection of stories highlighting the history of the co-op from the perspective of these incredible individuals. Now, these stories can be read and enjoyed here by any member of our community!
